3 Reasons Strong Design Will Make (Or Break) Your Business’ Branding

Cecilia Nysing

When you hear the word “design,” you might be tempted to think “I’m not a designer.” But regardless of whether you have any artistic ability, just about everyone has an eye for design.

After all, we all have things that we find innately appealing in art and visuals. Even if we’re not fully aware of it, there are certain design choices that we love — and others that we hate.

As unique as we like to think we are, certain design choices tend to have universal appeal. This is an important thing to be mindful of in business. Strong design will go a long way in helping you reach your target audience and get them to do business with you. No matter what your niche, strong design needs to be a top priority in your branding strategy.

1. Strong Design Makes A Lasting First Impression

You might not consciously notice good design when you first see it — but bad design?

That eyesore is going to stick out like a sore thumb whether you’re seeing it on a highway billboard or a website. Bad design almost always leaves a bitter taste in potential customers’ mouths that isn’t easy to get rid of. Unless you do a major re-brand later on, there’s a good chance that in their minds, you will forever be associated with that ugly design they accidentally stumbled across.

I recently had the opportunity to speak about this with Christiaan Huynen, founder and CEO of DesignBro. Via email, he explained, “Design is something you have to get right the first time. You only have one first impression with your customers. If they see cheap design work that looks like you didn’t put any effort or thought into it, what does that say about your business? The quality of your design is quite often seen as a reflection on the quality of everything else your business does, for better or worse.”

Bad design can be such a turn-off that you might be better off waiting a few months to launch your brand so you can nail the design, rather than launching early with a design that drives customers away.

2. Strong Design Leads To Immediate Customer Recognition

No matter what they’re looking for, prospective customers always go for the more “comfortable” choice. Let’s face it: none of us like to go outside of our comfort zones. We like to stick with what we already know.

Strong design will create this sense of comfort for prospective clients. Quality design can stick in a customer’s mind so that when they see your brand and its content again in the future, they’ll remember who you are.

Just think of the logos and branding of the big-name companies you do business with on a regular basis. Chances are, there are a lot of them that you could recognize from a logo alone. In fact, you could probably recognize brands you DON’T use thanks to their memorable design work as well.

Strong design can achieve similar things for your brand. Even if customers have never formally worked with your business before, previous exposure to your strong brand design will help them recognize and trust you. While your logo probably won’t become as easily recognizable as the golden arches of McDonald’s, it can still eventually provide a source of instant recognition within your industry.

3. Strong Design Builds Emotional Bonds With Buyers

Brand design is all about triggering emotion. In fact, you can find entire articles devoted to color psychology, because the colors we see can have a direct impact on our mental state. For example, red is associated with excitement, youth and being bold, while blue evokes feelings of trust, strength, and dependability.

You may not consciously be aware of these things when you see a logo or visit a website, but design will have a subtle influence on your emotional state. It influences the feelings you associate with that brand.

The same is true of your buyers, who generally make emotional buying decisions. Yes, logic does come into play for more expensive purchases (especially in the B2B world), but most of the time, these decisions are still fueled by emotion.

Your design is the first step in triggering the emotional reaction you want to get from your prospective customers. While it takes time and consistency to help prospects form a strong emotional connection with your brand, design is where it all begins.

Strong design sets the emotional expectations for what the relationship with the brand will be like. Deliver on those subconscious cues, and you’ll be on your way to converting more leads.

It’s Time To Up Your Design Game

If you haven’t given design much thought in your branding exercises until now, it’s time to repent! I’m talking fire and brimstone-type consequences raining down on your business if you don’t. If you’re not a design expert, hire someone who is so they can create designs that truly capture your brand.

You can’t afford to neglect branding design any longer. Giving it the attention it deserves could be one of the most important things you do to grow your brand. Take the time to get it right. Your business will thank you for years to come.
